Issues with Cloud Storage Software

This page applies to Firestorm 4.3.1 only.

Some “cloud storage” software is known to conflict with Firestorm, resulting in crashes when attempting to upload or download images (textures), or anything else. Such programs include:

  • SkyDrive
  • iCloud
  • Google Drive

Ref. our JIRA FIRE-8458.

Try the solution below to fix the issue:

  • Log out of the viewer - required or this will fail to work
  • Download the file libtcmalloc_minimal.dll
  • Browse to your Firestorm installation folder and add this file to it. When it asks if you want to replace the existing file, say yes.
  • Your Firestorm install folder will be located at:
    • 32 bit systems: C:\Program Files\Firestorm-Release
    • 64 bit systems: C:\Program Files(x86)\Firestorm-Release

SkyDrive is an online (web) based storge system from Microsoft. It is now being bundled as part of Windows Essentials. You may even have it installed without being aware of it - see here.

You may either remove SkyDrive, or make registry changes to work around the issue.

Disable or Uninstall SkyDrive

For instructions on removing SkyDrive, see here.

Make Registry Changes

Please do not attempt this if you are not comfortable making changes to the system registry.

  • Start regedit (start → run → type “regedit” → hit enter)
  • Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
  • In the left panel you should see 3 SkyDrive keys (1, 2 and 3)
  • Delete all 3 of them
  • Reboot

The best thing to do is to uninstall the cloud software. You can do this via Add/Remove Programs.
